Some stenographers think it is a disgrace to be seen using a dictionary. Quite the contrary; it shows that a girl is careful and is trying to do accurate work. The girls who have the best record for correct spelling are not those who neglect the use of the dictionary. Remember that there is absolutely no excuse for even one misspelled word in the letter, for you always have the opportunity to use the dictionary. So make it a rule and a habit with yourself to look up every word concerning the spelling of which you have any doubts. If you do this you will find in time that you will have to use the dictionary only rarely. There is no need to give space in this book to the rules of spelling. You will find them given in complete detail in any good dictionary. It might be advisable to study them, for if you can remember them you need not spend so much time looking up words. Technical and Trade Words Every trade, business, and profession uses words and expressions that are peculiar to it. The dictator in the printing business uses such words as em, pica, Caslon, and saddle stitching; in the banking business, such words as amortize, debenture, bearish, and when, as, and if issued; and in the legalprofession, such words as garnishee, praecipe, quash, and "on all fours."
