The 1998 State of the World's Children report concerns a silent emergency known as malnutrition. Rising out of the combined onslaught of poverty and preventable diseases, malnutrition takes the lives of nearly 200 million children (aged five or younger) every single day--most of them in the developing world. Malnutrition also threatens mental and physical development, and can have, as illustrated in this volume, severely harmful effects on children, families, and--ultimately--the social and economic growth of nations. UNICEF considers herein the three key factors indicative of whether a child will thrive and develop, as well as the low-cost measures designed to improve the quality of life of children and their communities. The book argues that efforts to combat malnutrition must include improvements in women's education and status, access to health care, and safe water and sanitation. It also includes a proposed plan of action to alleviate some of the effects of childhood malnutrition.
