One look at the soundtracks More Dirty Dancing and Trainspotting, Vol. 2 more than supports this theory, and such is also the case with The State I'm In. But the misleading thing about the packaging here is that The State I'm In is not a supplemental soundtrack; it's not even affiliated with the movie at all (there's really fine print on the inside that states this rather quietly). But, as the liner notes reveal in a much larger font size, this is a collection featuring music from some of the artists on the actual soundtrack, as well as much that could have easily been included. Whatever the marketing plan, there are some classic compositions here courtesy of the Velvet Underground, Serge Gainsbourg, and Cat Stevens. And unfortunately, there are just as many forgettable tunes, making this a rather uneven affair that does the original soundtrack a slight disservice. ~ Rob Theakston, Rovi
