Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Very Good jacket. Size: 8vo 8"-9" tall; Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound in octavo hardcover format, dark blue, shiny cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spine, clean of interior, unmarked, neither ex-library nor ex-libris, with less than minimal rubbing to extremities, and neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Top-stained in blue. Intact paper dust jacket, printed, moderately worn, lightly chipped edges, sunned a bit to edges, more heavily to spine. This volume comprises Volume XVI (1916-1917), Introductory Lectures on Psycho-Analysis, Part III. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. The life and works and influence of the Austrian Herr Doktor Sigmund Freud is well known, born on 6 May 1856, and dead by 23 September 1939 on the eve of the Second World War. Trained in neuology, he founded psychoanalysis, a sort of "talking cure" of mental pathologies that he theorized sprung from conflicts in the young psyche. The translator here, James Beaumont Strachey (26 September 1887-25 April 1967), eventually became an analyst himself, following two years as an analysand of Freud; he was assisted greatly here by his wife Alix Strachey, also a practicing psychoanalyst. James Strachey had 12 siblings, 10 of whom lived to adulthood; his father 70 when he was born, his mother, 47. The present edition was to be his crowning glory but has a complicated back-story and an even more complicated bibliography. Perhaps the first Freudian, Ernest Jones, called out Freud's difficulty of translation (from Austrian-German into English), and over the years Strachey's translations of especially Freud's theoretical works into English was difficult and controversial, leading to charges of inaccuracy and rancor. Freud's Collected Papers (four volumes) first came in the 1924-1925. Each of the 24 volumes that comprise the Complete Works of which this is a volume wrestles with difficult material, introduces it in proper context and importance and augments it with biographical and bibliographical data. This volume, like the others, comes complete with a translator's note, presentation of multiple papers by Freud, then bibliography and author index, list of abbreviations and a general index. v [1], 243-496 pp. Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
