He dreads nothing so much as self-contemplation: he avoids and forgets himself, and would shrink from diminishing His Father's glory in the slightest degree by any feeling of complacency; and if he ever surprises himself in doing so, he looks upon the fault as a crime. The delicacy of his love goes further still. He is content to please God, without being eager to know whether he does please Him. He neglecta no means whereby he may be acceptable in God's sight, but He asks for no sign or assurance that such is the case. His self-love might brood upon the gratifying knowledge, and so his love for God might lose in purity. TWELFTH MAXIM. It is the property of grace to strive against nature.
