This is the story of Catherine of Aragon, a daughter of of Isabelle of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon through the eyes of her lady in waiting.. She was sent to England to marry Prince Arther, the first son of Henry VII. Prince Arthur died within a few months of the wedding. Catherine insisted the marriage had never been consummated. Nevertheless, she cooled her heels in England for seven years while her parents haggled with Henry VII over the rest of her dowry. In the meantime, since no one gave her any money she was forced to sell the gold plate that consisted of the first half of her dowry. Meanwhile, her ladies who were still young fretted over having to wear thread bare gowns and being cut off from court life so they might never catch a husband. Catherine believed fervently that the second son of Henry VII who became Henry VII would marry her even though he was six years younger. The young Henry still in his teen when he ascended the throne was young enough to admire an older woman but then follows a long series of disappointments while Catherine's children all die except one, a girl, Princess Mary. The lady in waiting, Frances eventually marries and leaves court. She returns to serve Catherine, after the death of her husband years later. It is at this point that young Anne Boleyn enters the picture and Henry decides he wants a divorce. Catherine refuses to be put away. Her mother had ruled Castile so why couldn't their daughter? Although the book is historically accurate and Frances's story is interesting, I would recommend The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory over this one. Still for people interested in the Tudor period, this is a good read.
