I have read 4 other books by Michener, and I know he can get very long winded, and can drone on, however, in this novel, it was almost unbearable. It took me five years to read this, on and off, because of his writing style, which was absolutely horrible. 'Space' was faces paced and full of information this was just religious interpretation and was soooo very boring. I'd pass on this one, I didn't gain any real information on this book.

Excellent historical novel
Michener can't be beaten for thorough research. This is an interesting trip back to the cave men Ina town and then brings us forward through the roots of Judaism toIsrael today

A Masterpiece of Historical Fiction
This book is without a doubt one of the most influential books I have read. I first came across it some 30+ years ago, and have given copies as gifts many times. It brings to life the succession of societies that lived at the same location in the middle east, using the vehicle of a modern-day archaeological excavation to literally "dig gown" through the earth and the years. I came away with a far broader understanding of the importance of Israel as a natural crossroads between continents. Highly recommend this book to anyone who likes history or wants a deeper view of humanity.

reading the past
I first read this book almost thirty years ago and found it just as enjoyable and informative as the first reading.Michener has the knack packing adventure together with highly accurate historical information wrapped around interesting characters. This book is definately one of his best, with many cameo's and snapshots in time, skillfully woven into an absorbing archealogical dig. A really good read.
