And though no doubt they are applicable to every dark and terrible valley through which human E very commonly, I think, take these words as feet are called to go, though their expression of trust and hope can never be more in place than when the darkness before us is complete, and the terror to be faced unknown, and no help left but in reliance upon the unseen God, we make a mistake, and fail to understand fully the imagery of the psalm, if we interpret the words wholly or prevailingly in this sense. The royal poet--for this is generally admitted to be a genuine psalm of David--is putting a spiritual meaning into the various experiences of his shepherd's life; and as he once led his flock to the green pastures and by the still waters, so he ascribes whatever of peaceful happiness his own life had known, to the kindly guidance of God. But he bethought him, too, of some valley, bare and desolate, where no water ever trickled among the stones, save perhaps when in winter some torrent rushed on its brief course of destruction, and again was dry: where no palm-trees made a grateful shade: where even the grass refused to grow upon the parched sand and the sunsmitten rock: a ravine, perchance, that led down into that deep valley where sleep the waters of the...
