This biographical book about a rising star in the world of evolutionary theory and genetics focuses on the astonishing life and work of a 38 year old Phd Herpatologist (snake expert), Joe Slowinsky. It is a page turner. The book has the elements of a travelogue, a biography and a journalistic tone which details the petty jealousies that can impede scientific work, the "on the edge" ethics of competing scientists and the impact of world politics on the work of scientists like Slowinsky. The writer describes the charmed life of young Slowinsky whose love of the natural world was nourished by loving parents and a sister, Rachel. Slowinsky is the Darwin of the snake world and creates for himself an opportunity to lead the first scientific expedition since the 1930's into Burma, today known as Myanmaar, a country controlled by a military junta. Most everyone abhors snakes, but this marvelous little book engages us with descriptions of the most poisonous snakes in the world at the beginning of every chapter. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves biography, scientific adventure and if you are curious at all about people who work with and are fascinated by snakes--you'll love this book. It's a quick read too.
