Then she slipped through it, looking about her and breathing quite fast with excitement and wonder and delight. She was standing inside the secret garden' Everybody at Misselthwaite Manor agrees that Mary Lennox is the most disagreeable child they have ever met. Pale, selfish and spoilt, the ten-year-old orphan has been sent from India to her uncle's estate and she is determined to hate everything about it. But the isolated house on the Yorkshire moors holds secrets that Mary cannot resist exploring: pitiful crying that echoes down the corridors at night and a hidden walled garden. When a robin leads Mary to the buried key, not only is the garden unlocked, but also her heart. And as the garden blooms, for the first time in her life, Mary discovers friendship. This is where the magic begins . . . A collection that will be coveted by children and adults alike, this list is the best in children's literature, curated by Virago. So much to learn...
I never read this as a little girl but when I bought this for my 8 year old granddaughter I decided I would read it first. Once I did I had to buy a second book for another granddaughter. So many lessons to be learned on healthy attitudes; relationships; appreciating nature and healthy priorities in life. It's really something adults and children alike can benefit from reading. It really deserves the rank of a CLASSIC.

A Book to Read Your Grandchildren
I was read this book as a little tot, but I liked it so much I read it again myself at about age 12. Then I managed to find a paperback copy (My mother's original hardback was burned in a house fire.) I read it to my three children and then my Grandchildren. I couldn't resist looking for a hardcover copy to read my Great-grandchildren. This story has misterious parts, sad parts, funny parts, and loving parts. And of course a nice happy ending. I can hardly wait until my new book , "The Screte Garden" arrives. It's always had a special place in my heart.

Perfect gift for a friend's birthday - she'd been wanting another copy for a long time. (Her dog tore hers).
