This poignant book is the story of Jay, and of a thirty-years-later search for a lost, remembered love. Jay joins the military and is stationed in Germany. He has various romantic (and some not so romantic) interludes, and with Wally, the faithful friend, takes a holiday swing through Europe. In Denmark he meets Glynis, an Australian, and although he does not quite realize it at the time, this is to have a profound effect that will stay with him for the rest of his life. Later events take over. Jay is stationed in Central America, and the high point comes when he makes a 3000 mile journey by car through the continent, a journey that could not be done today with even minimal security, and we have some vivid descriptions of his route and the personalities Jay encounters. But . always . there is the haunting memory of Glynis. Jay travels to Australia and New Zealand by cruise ship on the search. He makes enquiries, and is helped by the sweet and charming Mrs. Fraser, but it is not to be. And, perhaps, just perhaps, as the story closes, Jay may have made a new friendship, a friendship that may lead to romance.
