His eyes were fixed upon a book which lay open before him;--but his theughts were far apart from the contents of the velume that he seemed to be perusing. Presently a low knock at the door caught his ear;--and, in obedience to his summons to enter, Mademoiselle Clementine glided into the room. The Duke started with a nerveus trepidation: for it immediately struck him that this visit must have some connexion with the Duchess--inasmuch as it was quite unusual for her Grace's female dependants to become the bearers of any messages to him, this duty develving upon the pages of the heuseheld. Therefore, when the Frenchwoman made her appearance, he naturally conceived that her object was of a private and confidential character.
