A complete history of what the Dey and his Divan fondly called The famous and warlike city of Algiers would comprise that of all the maritime states of Europe from the sixteenth century, and a never-ending series of intestine struggles and revolutions that would possess no interest for any one. The author does not propose to do more than to illustrate the history of British relations with this Scourge of Christendom, ' from its origin as a piratical state till the abolition of Christian slavery by Lord Exmouth in 1816, and the final conquest of the country by the French.
