On one point, however, in the history of the School of Salernum all writers happily agree: I refer to the important in uence exerted upon its development by the Benedictine monks of Monte Casino. We have seen that several writers on the history of medicine believe that the school was founded by the monks of this famous monastery. Whether this be so or not, the monastery of Monte Casino, it self a school of medicine of wide reputation in its day, and cer' tainly intimately connected with the School of Salernum, de serves, and will, I trust, excuse, a short digression from our main subject.
