The cylindrical casts of the central pith of the stem are covered with longitudinal flutings, interrupted at intervals. Formerly these casts were compared to the ribbed stems of horsetails, and to reeds, but it has now been shewn that they are casts, not of the whole stem, but only of the central pith cavity; for specimens have been found in which the wood may still be seen encircling the fluted' cast.
