This is a delightful book with CD combination that has been a holiday tradition in our family since it was published in the 1990s. The stained-glass style illustrations are stunning, simple and graphic in jewel-toned colors. But the best part is really the CD, which they did very well. Morgan Freeman narrates the story beautifully in his deep, rich voice (it is not word-for-word the same as the text), hewing quite close to the biblical nativity story. The music is phenomenal ... recorded by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir in Oxford, England with traditional Christmas pieces (mostly not carols) from all over Europe. After the version where Freeman reads the story with the music underlaying the story, they include all of the music again, without the voiceover, so you can enjoy it in all its glory. We read it to our daughter when she was young and then she listened to the CD and "read" it to herself and learned the music, creating a real love of this kind of music. It became a family favorite, taken out right after Thanksgiving and played daily until Christmas Day. Every year we play it several times just while decorating our tree. Though it says it is for children, adults will enjoy this book as well, especially the CD.
