A young musician is ordered by the SS to participate in an experiment in a concentration camp. A diabolical officer has decided to study the effects of reviving hope in internees by letting them be exposed to the beauty of music. Alternately repulsed and apathetic to the plight of these prisoners, the author leaves us to wonder how much of the musicians past had a hand in his being picked for this exercise. Suffice to say, no one comes off really well. A well written study of how people react in the face of evil and how they survive.
