He made some changes to the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic liturgies, adapting the Roman rite while drawing inspiration from Anglo-Saxon traditions. Some 19th century liturgists claimed that the Rouen liturgy served as a reference for the creation of the Salisbury liturgical books.Osmundo's work was completed by the compilation of a new missal, a breviary and other liturgical books, which were later used in the south of England, Gaul and Ireland. Some bishops adopted the same missals, while others added their own prayers. The rite of Sarum influenced the rite of Braga in Portugal and the rite of Nidaros in Norway and also by some religious orders, such as the Dominicans.The rite of Sarum was adopted by the Anglican Communion in the 1530s, but was gradually modified in several successive editions of the Book of Common Prayer in which the Protestant influence is evident. It was reintroduced for a short time by Queen Mary. It was used by the Catholics of England until the 17th century, before being gradually replaced by the Roman rite.In the 19th and 20th centuries it was used by the Oxford movement, a pro-Catholic Anglican Communion current. On some occasions it has also been adopted by Catholics, including today the Archbishop of Glasgow Mario Joseph Conti.It is also used by the Western Rite Orthodox faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia.
