This book falls in with the likes of Mika Waltari's "Egyptian" as far as historical novels go. It is a very well written and researched; Mr. Trotter has done his homework on the United States of America's Civil War. This book is a historical novel and does take some liberty with historical data but it is well within the bounds of the book. Trotter's character development as well as his imagery captivate the reader. This is one of those books you hate to put down. If you read this book you will not be able to do without the sequel "The Fires of Pride" which is equally well written and researched. This book is a must read and will not disappoint the casual reader, student of history, or historian. Excellent book overall!
