I truly enjoyed the passage in time that Steven Maffeo sent me on. The Russian Who Saved the World: A Novel of the Cuban Missile Crisis
Imagine being on a Russian Foxtrot submarine, on a mission far away from your own area of operation and environment, hounded by aggressive ASW warships of the U. S. Navy, which are only a sampling of stress variants for the crew and the CO of the submarine who is seriously thinking about firing a torpedo...Did I mention a nuclear torpedo?
The author, using information from books and documents of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 gives us a fictionalized ride in this Soviet submarine during this climatic time. He gives the reader a brief look of how catastrophic alternate history of October 1962 could have been. This is a Historic Fiction novel at its best for a tense time period almost 59 years ago.
Sometimes we all feel that we would like to go back in time to witness a particular event, and Maffeo's book does that for me. Using sources he listed aroused my curiosity to learn more about the little known facts of the Crisis. Well worth the read! I am a fan of his previous books, most notably "The Perfect Wreck - Old Ironsides and HMS Java: A Story of 1812."
