As those who have read the first sets of the Thomas Covenant series might guess, the Land is in trouble once again.
Linden Avery M.D., 10 earth-years after witnessing Covenant's death in his (and her) own world, again encounters his wife and son. Through a force she immediately recognizes, she is violently called back to the Land where she must prove herself to many who, over 3000 Land-years prior, would have been certain allies. As well, an incongruous source of power in that Land, Anele, is a mysterious force which may or may not be beneficial to her. To access that force, though, she must face the powerful Masters of the Land and that force's own peculiar defenses.
Unexpectedly, Linden also finds potent allies who, in spite of the years, the Masters, and the malevolent force which had called her, carry her, literally, through time and over leagues to protect her and help her prove herself. Perhaps these elite allies, the Ranyhyn, are her primary resource as she searches for a beneficial tool lost too soon after she had created it at the end of her sojourn 3000 Land-years earlier ? the Staff of the Law.
And then there is Covenant's "white gold" ring hanging around her neck. Is it hers to use?
Where is Covenant? Read the book and learn as Linden Avery learns.
Stephen R. Donaldson, the author, is a master of words and is not afraid to stretch his reader's vocabulary! Even then, the book moves quickly. Being book 1, Donaldson, of course, leaves us, his readers, ready for more ? and it's already here, in book 2.
