Excerpt from The Royal Phraseological English-French, French-English Dictionary: English-French Part In the beginning of my career, as a French teacher, at the Free School at' Macclesfield, I had frequent discussions with my pupils, who almost taxed me with capriciousness, when, in correcting their French exercises or compositions, I substituted dc for h or pour, one day, and h or pour, for de, the next. The same happened when I altered the relative and personal pronouns. I replied, that such corrections were not directed by caprice or whim, but rested on grammatical cousi derations. I said, that if they had consulted their dictionary, to ascertain the right case or mood governed by the adjective or verb they had used, they would not have made the mistake. To prove that I was right, we referred to the dictionary; but great was my dis appointment in finding almost at every step that all dictionaries were deficient in that respect - that their authors had completely overlooked such an important matter as the difference in the construction of the two languages, and, consequently, had neglected to show the proper cases and moods.
