This travel guide reads like it was written by two or more writers: Author A seems to have contributed most of the first 330 pages, author B probably penned the following 50 pages. Both sections are truly informative and factually correct, as far as we could verify. However, while author B?s section delivers a respectful (though not uncritical) review of Dominican history, environment, music and sports, author A seems to harbor personal issues that show up in unneeded disparaging comments about Dominican culture.
For example, the faceless dolls of Higüerito, a uniquely-Dominican doll-making custom, are called ?tacky (p49)?, the Dominican music of merengue is simplified to an ?omnipresent thud (p.39)? and the Latin music superstar Juan Luis Guerra is labeled as a ?bachata crooner (p. 98)?. This last insult would be tantamount to referring to Beyonce or Sting as washed-up lounge singers.
The several cultural insults throughout the first section of the book detract from its otherwise excellent travel information.
Also, the food recommendations are for specifically U.S. tastes. If you come from a different culture, you should not believe them.
Finally, for my part, I found the faceless dolls puzzling and would have appreciated if the book had explained how this custom came about.
