Fine story of a remarkable family history which as Morton says in his preface is practically the backstage history of Europe, America and most of the known world at that time. Morton's sardonic style makes his points without being obnoxious about them.
What Old Mayer and his sons and now great grandsons did and are still doing would not be believed if it were just made up. But that is true of most real history as one finds the more one digs deeper than the journalistic surface.
