A fair idea of the region may be gained from The Nor folk and Suffolk Broads, a book not uncommon in our large public libraries. The town is in the vicinity of Buckenham Broad, one of those vast shallow inbreaks of the North Sea which make these two counties the paradise of those who take their holidays upon the water; yachts, houseboats, pleasure craft of every description, congregate there like flocks of great sea fowl. No facil ity is lacking for fishing, bathing, entertaining; for the study of Nature or for the worship of Mammon. The pleasure - seekers form a large community of themselves, and certain unwritten laws, safeguarding the comfort of each and all, are de riguem' among them. Whether John Roper and his sons ever looked upon the like is doubt ful. However, three hundred years represent far less change in English customs than in our own, and there was probably in 1637 something on the Norfolk Broads, which has been merged into this modern holiday making.
