There are two versions of this book 1979 (Red Cover) and 1983?(Blue Cover). The first one was an audacious attempt to chronicle every album in print, and many that were out of print, at the last moment when this could remotely be possible. The book stands the test of time, thirty years later, with its contemporary reviews of everyone from the Blind Boys of Alabama to the Clash. Memories fade and I refer to this book all the time, to try to separate who was really something then, to those who have only improved with time. The quality of the reviews is excellent, and each is signed by the reviewer. The vast majority are by DM, Dave Marsh, who must have thought this task would never end. Every 5 star album has its cover photo in the book, immortalizing Carole King along with Jimi Hendrix, and basically every Beatles album. Of course the book is frozen in a certain space in time, with Punk just getting going and many artists stopped in mid-discography. The incomplete nature of the First Edition just means we have a quality send off to go check the same info out online, but the loyal reader will always return to this book for the old-school perspective on quality artists, and the nuggets of fact and opinion contained in each review. The somewhat incomplete and frozen nature of the project is surely what forced the second edition of the book. But since it's basically the same size, and has to cover four more years of an exploding topic, the second edition is spread thinner, with more listings and less detail on each one. Both books let fly with contempt when needed for the wasteful and useless acts, and the Seventies were full of those. These books are worth buying just to read a scathing one sentence review of a four album ouevre by someone awful out loud. Just imagine how thick a book would have to be today, to comment on every album in print... these books are the real deal, a time warp, and a good one.
