Eager for the publicity and drawn to the challenge, Mickey takes the case, with Detective Harry Bosch on board as his lead investigator. This fine novel by Michael Connelly brings together half-brothers Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch - on the same side of the case. The LA District Attorney convinces Mickey to move to the prosecution side as a special prosecutor in a 24+ year-old case. The California Supreme Court has reversed the 24 year-old decision; instead of dropping the conviction (for time served), LA decides to retry it.
Haller decides to go over to 'the dark side' in the second trial of Jason Jessup partly because he can name his own team. He decides on his former wife, Maggie McPherson (a deputy district attorney), as second chair and Harry Bosch, as their investigator.
Jason Jessup has been busy in prison those 24 years, trying to get someone to listen to his cries of innocence through his motions and appeals. Jessup was convicted of abducting and strangling a 12 year-old girl, Melissa Landy. Finally, Jessup gets the interest of the Genetic Justice Project, a group of lawyers (who run DNA tests and find that there is no trace of Jessup on the girl's dress --DNA evidence predates this case).
The characters are well-drawn, the dialogue is on-target and the mystery is suspenseful. The story was so compelling that I couldn't put it down. This is an exceptional, tension-filled story.
