Of all the stories spawned by WW II this is one of the best. A well written book of remarkable courage and endurance. The book had a great impact on me since one of the major players (Howard Chrisco) in the story was from my home town. He was a very mild mannered, soft spoken individual. A true American hero. I'm surprised it took until 2001 for someone to put the story in writing. Well done!

The Rescue-S. T. Smith
This is a well researched book which is presented in a riveting and an informative manner. People whom I know who lived in the area attest to the accuracy of the story. This is a view, from the side of the "captives in the Phillipines" which is only infrequently reported upon and yet important to our understanding of the nature of unrestricted warfare. Indeed the Japanese treated all the inhabitants as combatants and made no such distinction as in want today to refer to "innocent civilians." Indeed the most brutal of reprisals was administered to captured soldiers and indigenous inhapitants alike. This is not glossed over in this "story", but is presented in the best tradition of a reporter, factual, without editorializing, no inflammatory rhetoric, and little if any bias. He focused on the "secret" war plans that aided in the defeat of the Japanese, although that had not been the primary aim of the research. It answers, for those of us who still read avidly about WWII, some lingering questions about how we were privy to some of the intelligence gathered in the Pacific Wars. This is a very worthwhile "read" for any WW II buff and other historians.
