Believe it or not, a lot of people who like Victorian-era adventure stories never heard of Richard Harding Davis. RHD was a journalism superstar in his day, and his life's work is a gold mine of rip-snortin' adventure journalism -- the kind that stops the fight for afternoon tea and tells the story in the parlor, clean, properly dressed, and with a stiff upper lip. Davis is Flashman -- without the sexual hijinks -- who demands to be taken seriously and should be granted that respect, for he was the real thing.
Davis was the foremost war correspondent of his day. After launching his career in journalism, he got into every scrap and major disaster that happened in the world between 1882 and 1917, when he died of a massive heart attack. He wrote newspaper stories, sketches, true adventure and fiction. It sold like hotcakes at the time, and there's lots of it out there for modern readers to sip on. Read Arthur Lubow's 'The Reporter Who Would be King.' Then go and read Davis's stories: they're chock full of real-life villains and heroes, many of whom had adventures you never heard tell of before. Richard Harding Davis is great stuff.
