This can be far more difficult than the immediate 'hurt me, and I'll hurt you back' response. Terrible betrayals have a way of changing victims for the rest of their lives, sometimes for the better but more often for, the worse. Sometimes, victims, remembering the original hurt and perhaps seething over it for much of a lifetime, finally decide to strike back.
