The storyline follows a group of ill-fated refugees, forced to leave their homes by the evil of the war and much-feared enemies-foreign occupiers and gangs of paramilitaries-through their journey to safety and ending of a war. The novel delivers a story and describes events that took place in Balkans from 1917 to 1918 during the First World War. It is based on the memories of a real individual who was a refugee as a young boy at that time. The messages from the novel are highly applicable to the events and problems of the contemporary time and human suffering raging at various parts of the globe today.
