**** I went about delving into this series by both reading and listening to this first book (two mediums). In this novel version, I noticed some various differences to the audio. I have to say comparatively that for the audio it was more edited and focused. In this new, American edition it has much more description and a slight reordering of chapter paragraphs. The audio focused more on main characters actions like Yann, Sido, Tetu, and Count Kalliovski. The book built up the world and interactions between them more so. Secondary characters had more development such as Mr. Trippen and his family, Didier, et cetera. It could be a bit diverting as it slowed down the action and timing with the audio's more constant pace of the main story line. Though it did give that world a more lived-in quality with these outside events. I had to maneuver a little and skim through minor paragraphs quickly to catch up on some edited bits. As for specific voice work on the audio CD, Hiddleston shines at conveying the type of character he is portraying for our imaginations. It enhanced the reading of the novel in tandem with it. I began imagining those voices on these edited out pieces of the book. Interestingly, the different editions showed it has slight cultural difference in the British versus American terminology. Muffler became scarf, and a first floor became second floor. Apparently, what Americans see as a first floor is just the flat, ground level. To the Brits as their first floor means is designated to the first, actual, elevated floor, which we call a second floor in the USA. Tricky business when it comes to architecture. Despite the tweaks and editing of each, they both were engaging mediums to enjoy the story. While more lengthy than its audio brethren, it is a great telling of this interesting mix of historical fiction with these dark fantasy elements. I am excited and can't wait to read the next book!
