It's everything you would have looked for in a superhero story - cool and interesting powers, a plethora of intense battles, and surprising plot twists. Michael Carroll has definitely found a winner with The Reckoning, the third book in the Quantum Prophecy / New Heroes trilogy.
In the last book, one of the main characters, Colin, had left Sakkara and the other New Heroes. Now, he's fighting for the Trutopians, which are basically a powerful, growing community that talks of Utopia. It might not sound so bad, but its leader is actually an extraordinarily intelligent superhuman with other, darker priorities.
Now, the other New Heroes have to deal with Colin, in addition to a cruel labor camp, a mind-controlling Trutopian leader, and the impending war that is prophesized to kill billions. And the war does happen. But, toward the book's finish, one of the New Heroes will use her powers to end the strife in a very unexpected way.
As mentioned before, the book contains a ton of good action, and all of the superhumans are involved. Can any of the heroes stand up to Colin's incredible power?
The New Heroes trilogy does an amazing job at making you consider the implications of being a superhero. In this story, one recurring theme is distinguishing superhero from supervillain. If you do what you think is right, but everyone else believes that it's evil, does that make you a villain?
Overall, it's an amazing third book to the trilogy. One thing about this novel that sort of bugged me, however, was the huge cliffhanger at the end. The next one that we'll be getting is a prequel, to be released in May, so it's likely that we are going to have to wait at least a year to see what'll happen next.
But it can be said that the book does a very good job of making you want to read more. I would definitely recommend this.
