Good. With an Introduction by The Right Hon. Andrew Fisher. First printing. 8vo. Frontispiece map spread. xix, 281 pp. Illustrated with B & W photographs. Original purple cloth stamped in gilt. Seller's Description:
Fair. No Jacket. 1st US edition. From the Pratt Institute Library. The boards are very shelf rubbed, edge worn, tanned and marked, with the top edge of the board quite cracked and a chip from the top of the spine. Despite this, the boards remain strong. Internally, there is various library marking, embossing and paraphernalia on the end pages, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are neat and complete with all plates present, though the map is missing. The binding is secure. JK.

Seller's Description:
Very Good. No Jacket. 282 pages (complete). A most pleasing copy of this acute, if stringent, account of South Africa at the time of Union. Pratt had accompanied the Australian Prime Minister on his visit to attend the opening of the Union of South Africa's first parliament. Pratt racial attitudes were a melange of popular prejudice and progressiveness. Added to this his horror of Johannesburg and the behaviour of the white population in the city provided a lens through which he observed the rest of the country. The blue boards have wear, knocks, scuffing, marks from storage and handling. They are steady and sure. The frontispage has an ex-libris plate for R F Thorold. The contents are most agreeable. They are as comfortable and engaging as they are clean and clear, they are certain, combative, confident, companionably assured. fk.

Seller's Description:
Good in Poor jacket. 283 pages (complete). A benign copy. VERY RARELY found with original dustjacket. The dj is worn all about. It is scuffed, marked from handling and storage. It is comfortable and sure. The boards are mild-mannered. They have wear about the edges, corners from shelving and storage. They are secure and steady. The papertrims are a little foxed and tanned. Some pages are still uncut. The contents have flushes, spots and rashes of foxing about. Nonetheless, the book is in comfortable condition. The contents are bold with opinion and observation: "By far the most striking feature of social life in South Africa at this moment is the mailed front of insolent and intolerant aristocracy which the whites turn everywhere on the blacks, and on black efforts at encroachment." The pages are thick, healthy, clean, clear, confident. fk.
