All Whole Word programs start reading instruction with memorized "sight words" and guessing strategies. Many of our kids, including some of our brightest, can't learn to read in such a manner because it's not logical - it makes no sense to them. Parents can solve this problem by teaching their child to read themselves, using the method recommended by the National Reading Panel: Synthetic Phonics.
