Deerfoot, the Blackfoot who had been sought for so long, grew tired of a continual life of evasion and gave himself up, receiving a brief term in the cells at the police barracks. The brewery at Lethbridge was closed by the Department of Inland Revenue, and whisky smugglers continued with their disreputable business, the result of which was one of the most cold-blooded murders in the history of the Macleod district, the murder being directly traceable to a debauch with the poisonous "rotgut" which possibly made the perpretrators really irresponsible. Four or five cowboys succeeded in securing a supply of whisky one late fall day and at once repaired to the river near the reserve to have an uninterrupted spree. An Indian buck and his squaw saw the carousers and, Indian-like, came to get what they could, being greeted with a hilarious welcome, and treated to the best in the jug. Morning saw the drunken party still there, but with empty jug and doubtless a certain feeling of remorse, their minds confused and blurred by the poison fumes. Finally the squaw and her companion started to their camp across the river, and one befuddled cowboy suggested that she might tell someone where she secured her liquor and thus bring them all into trouble. "No, she won't," declared another, "Gimme yer gun," and drawing that weapon from the other's holster he shot the squaw dead. "Now, by gosh, the buck'll tell," complained another cowboy helplessly, and he had no sooner put this possibility into the mind of the murderer when the revolver cracked and the defenceless red man toppled over.
