It's summer in Memphis. The sweat is sticking to Rudy Baylor's shirt and creditors are nipping at his heels. Once he had aspirations of breezing through law school and punching his ticket to the good life. Now he doesn't have a job or a prayer-except for one: an insurance dispute that leaves a family devastated and opens the door for a lawsuit, if Rudy can find a way to file it. By the time Rudy gets to court, a heavyweight corporate defense team is there to meet him. And suddenly he's in over his head, plunged into a nightmare of lies and legal maneuverings. A case that started small is exploding into a thunderous million-dollar war of nerves, skill, and outright violence--a fight that could cost one young lawyer his life, or turn him into the biggest rainmaker in the land. Wholesome reading for any age.
John Grisham grabs and holds your attention in unfolding moral bankruptcy. At times THE RAINMAKER is quite humorous and at other times sad to know the things families were going through dealing with a health insurance company.
John Grisham is my favorite author. I have all his books and am looking forward to his next publication.

do you really want to be a lawyer?
Rudy Baylor is about to graduate from law school, and will soon take the bar examination. He has put himself through law school by bartending at a local pub for college students. He has a job waiting for him when he graduates, and he can'r wait to get into the real world and start making some money. He is so far in debt he will probably have to file bankrupcy. As part of a class he is taking, he visits a retirement type home with his class, and views several legal problems brought to him by elderly people. One woman wants a new will drawn up, and another wants an insurance company sued for not paying for her sons needed bone marrow transplant. Rudy leaves the meeting, and finds out the company he is going to go to work for has been bought out, and his position has been eliminated. Things get only worse before they get better. The thing I like about Grisham's writing is not only his story line, but he makes every character so real. This book also gives you a new insite to the life of an attorney.

Much better than the movie
Rudy is much more likable in the book. This is and interesting courtroom drama due to the fact all sort of trouble ends up right in poor Rudy's face. Parts of the narritive are slow and his romance with the abused girl is cliche, but the story itself is solid.
