The business world is ready for an entirely new approach to leadership. Steve Farber has written the perfect book to energize business leaders and help them make the leap into extreme leadership. In fact, taking a giant ""L.E.A.P."" forward is exactly what Farber prescribes. What exactly is an extreme leader? One who cultivates love, generates energy, inspires audacity, and provides proof. In his exciting and innovative business parable, "The Radical Leap," Farber explores an entirely new leadership model, one in which leaders are not afraid to take risks, make mistakes in front of employees, or actively solicit employee feedback. His book dispenses with the typical, tired notions of what it means to be a leader. Farber, former Vice President and Official Mouthpiece of the "Tom Peters Company," has written a business parable like no other, filled with vivid, fully realized, and eccentric characters, crazy plot twists, honest and believable conversations about leadership, and most importantly, an innovative program for leaders to inspire and engage their companies. In "The Radical Leap," we meet Steve, a leadership consultant who is intrigued and challenged by an enigmatic man named Edg, from whom he learns the concept of L.E.A.P. Steve is then asked to help a friend, Janice, overcome conflicts at the biotech company where she works and bring back the company's inspiring former CEO. The company is revitalized, having undergone a radical and successful transformation. Farber's book reveals the questions leaders must ask themselves in order to truly become extreme leaders, including: Why do I love my business, my employees, and my customers, and how can I show them how I feel? What effect do my actions have on the energy of the people around me? (OR, what are the unnecessary, time-consuming, bureaucratic policies and procedures that suck our energy?) How are we going to change the world of our company, our employees, customers, marketplace, and industry? What have I done today to show my commitment to my colleagues and customers?

I love business parables like The Radical Leap - in less than 100 pages they can distill some powerful information and convey it in a manner that is easy to understand and correlate to our lives. They are easy to read, digest, apply and revisit - yet carry powerful messages to those who choose to listen.
We are all leaders. Most of us suck at it. I know that I do most of the time. Why is this? Because we mistake leadership with an external process rather than an internal practice. Leadership comes from what you do - demonstrate - not from what you say. Mission statements, corporate goals, values, objectives etc mean nothing if they are produced by the mind. We know what needs to be done, we talk about it, we tell others what to do, we create actions lists and goals, then - nothing. We read the books, listened to the tapes, paid the consultant and followed all the ?steps to success? - so why did we fail. What did we not do?
We failed to L.E.A.P.!
That is the essence of this little book. To excel we must:
L - Cultivate Love
E - Generate Energy
A - Inspire Audacity
P - Provide Proof
Cultivate Love - We have to be real with people. We need to bring our heart with us everywhere we go. To many of us live in our heads - its all about strategy, skulduggery, intellect, skills, positioning, etc - we forget that we are working for and with humans - people who have family, friends, hobbies, interests, challenges, feelings and dreams of their own. Yes, all of the networking books tell us this same thing - but with one flaw - it too easily becomes an emotionless, disengaged formality - a manipulation - that is used to achieve our desires instead of a true expression and connection with another person. To be returned love has to be real, unconditional and given without strings attached. Anything else is fake and leads to failure. No one wants to follow a fake.
Generate Energy - The unfortunate truth is that most of us get more fired up about our ?virtual? lives than we do our real ones. We are often filled with excitement and anticipation over the impending championship game, movie premier, TV show finale, weekend getaway or any number of other distractions than we are about the activities that occupy the majority of our time, are of the most importance and impact our future and our legacy. Work, parenting, money, health, spirituality - all areas of critical importance that most of us approach with resistance, resentment and fear. These are the have to?s in our lives. We love football - stay up late plotting the next fantasy football draft - but dread working out. Why is this? Because we have no vision for the have to?s - we see them as chores to be checked off - they do not fit into any bigger agenda. To, to generate energy, create a vision for each of these areas and get excited about where you are going. Learn, grow and do - constantly. Put your energy into those things that produce real results, enjoy the distractions, but don?t live for them.
Inspire Audacity - Dream it and go for it. Seek out OS!M?s (Oh S..t! Moments). The world is filled with people who will object, caution, resent, restrict, criticize and obstruct. It is also filled (a smaller group, for sure) with people who did it anyway - they dreamed, worked hard, risked and succeeded beyond their expectations. Then they were called ?lucky? by those too afraid to break free. Lead by example, encourage those around you to dream big - to reach beyond what is before them toward what is possible - and support them in their pursuit. Our fears and the restraints placed upon us by convention create a world with tremendous untapped potential.
Provide Proof - You do it, first. Love others, be fired up about your life and risk everyday for your dreams - when those around you see the results they will follow suit. Do it publicly - be real - fall, stumble, win, lose, dream - put it all out there. So many of us look at successful people and believe that they possess talents, advantages, skills, traits or genetic attributes that enable them to win big - we think they are different, which they are, but be self-creation, not be divine selection. They do things - everyday - that make them different. The proof is in their doing is - consistently. Musicians, actors, writers, entrepreneurs who continue to risk, grow, change and learn experience the greatest level of success.
Thats it. Simple. Not easy.
I have made it a practice to constantly read books like The Radical Leap. I have realized that success begins with reprogramming of the mind and self. You are where you are as a results of your beliefs, attitudes and habits. To get a different result you must establish new ones. To kill the old, stop feeding it. To grow the new - feed it constantly. The Radical Leap can be a part of your new - improved - mental diet. It only takes a couple hours to read but the lessons can impact your life forever.
The key is that WE must change - we have to go first - love, risk, give - before anyone or anything else will. You go first!
