I just recently watched the movie made from this book and liked it very much. I also like the book very much as well. Con Vallian is one of L'Amour's better heroes--a man who knew it was safest to mind your own business and keep yourself out of trouble, but when injustice was being done to someone, sometimes it was necessary to get involved to make things right. Duncan McKaskel, his wife Susanna, and young son Tom, have come west to make themselves a new home and a new beginning. They are immediately faced with not only hostile Indians but with rustlers. Pretty good book.
