I intended to have signalized my first appearance by a certain large statement, which I flatter myself is the nearest approach to a universal formula, of life yet promulgated at this breakfast-table. It would have had a grand effect. For this purpose I fixed my eyes on a certain divinity-student, with the intention of exchanging a few phrases, and then forcing my court-card, namely, The great end of being.-I will thank you for the sugar, -I said.-Man is a dependent creature. Seller's Description:
None. Very Good Indeed. A smartly bound copy of this famous work by Oliver Wendell Holmes. The Professor is the second of Holmes' breakfast-table series which take the form of one-sided dialogues with several characters at a New England boarding house. It was originally published in 1859. All that is known of the characters are their profession, location at the table as well as defining characteristics. The first of the breakfast-table series was The Autocrat. Following the popularity of the first two titles Holmes wrote The Poet At The Breakfast Table which was published many years later in 1872. This particular edition is undated, dated from Copac. Holmes gained international fame from his Breakfast-Table series. The table talk books attracted a wide audience due to their conversational style. Homes' intentions were to mimic the philosophical debates and pleasantries which occur around the breakfast table. The subjects discussed range from medicine to theology, society, democracy, science, the natural world as well as sex and gender. In a half morocco binding. Externally, very smart with just some minor rubbing to the head and tail of spine and to extremities. Prior owners' inscriptions to the half title page dated 1944, 1945 and 1957. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed.
