Fitz-Gerald expressed himself obliged by the friendly interest evinced by his lordship for his welfare; and if not determined to follow the advice to the letter, was yet sufficiently aware of its value to make it the landmark of his conduct. He was also greatly amused, not less by the frankness of his conversation than by the shrewdness and knowledge of the world which it displayed. He must have studied mankind, he thought, in a strange school, to have drawn from it such opinions and principles. His host read, or rather guessed his thoughts, and said--"You think me a strange old fellow, Mr. Fitz-Gerald; perhaps I am so. You must, however, remember that, although we never met till to-day, the tie of blood is between us, and that your grandfather was my early friend. Many men think as I do, who have morality upon their lips as a mask to conceal it; with me the necessity of all dissimulation is past, my dream of life is all but closed, and in this world I have nothing either to hope or fear. But come," he continued, "I shall treat you as an old acquaintance, and indulge in my usual nap. I am tired of talking; shall I ring for more claret for you? or will you avail yourself of an old man's infirmity, as an excuse to make your parting bow?"
