I expected this book might have been Amish fiction, based on the cover, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was based on a famous Puritan. I guessed who it was by the name of his hometown, his occupation as a tinker, and the fact that he had a blind daughter named Mary. As an independent (Reformed Baptist, yay! ) preacher, he was often arrested and imprisoned for the crime of preaching without the approval of the Anglican church. It seems so bizarre to me in these days. While imprisoned, he wrote one of the most famous Christian books of all time, Pilgrim's Progress. Have you guessed yet? Unfortunately, it didn't get popular until after his death.
This story looks at the relationship he had with his second wife, Elizabeth and the hardships she and her family experienced apart from her husband.
Anyone who has read Pilgrim's Progress has received the blessing that came out of John Bunyan's trials. It was well written and engaging. I would have liked to see the bad guy get his just desserts, but maybe that didn't happen in real life. That was the only thing I found unfinished in the story.
I did actually tear up when John apologized to Elizabeth in the end.
