A collection of sermons around the theme of the tremendous opportunities available when the power of one is harnessed."Years ago, out of an interest in the achievements of culturally diverse ministry teams in the Church of the Nazarene, I expressed interest in meeting Dr. Oliver Phillips. A common friend introduced us to one another. The conversation that followed was as warm as a Caribbean and an African can make it, requiring no practice of "wait to see how far you may go." However, I did not know him as a preacher until two years later, when we met again as participants of a Holiness Conference held in Africa. In that setting, Dr. Phillips poured out his heart about his personal journey with the merciful Savior. What a passionate, enthusiastic, practical, convincing, forthright expositor of the Word of God (and hard for any good interpreter to put up with in terms of body language)! After his first sermon at the conference, everywhere Dr. Phillips went among the Nazarenes in town, I saw his many new friends trying to mimic his bending forward and backward, as only he can do to explain his personal experience of the work of God's grace. Everywhere, we heard the words: "my...my...my...my..." repeated, as to say "one can never reach the depth of such grace and its power to redeem, cleanse, and release." Such a one is the preacher I read in this book. His prophetic voice ministers to the church of the 21st century. He just cannot hide the, "Thus saith the LORD of hosts" that rings through his ears, heart, and mind. The message is current and factual and escorts our attention to the real world in which we live with so many oppressed, snagged by the power of sin, hopeless, and vulnerable souls. The author uses the kind of wisdom that allows God to speak through him, with no filter. He takes up the assignment of making us spiritually and socially aware of the cause for concern and entreats us to do something about it.In The Power of One, Phillips calls for action: the action that makes a difference and that cannot and should not wait for consensus. Instead, he incites the kind of courage that the power and care of conviction in just one servant of God who will not miss the opportunity, can bring about. And all of this is possible by the power of the One God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. If you are interested in the power that can release the potential that God owns in you, this book is a tool with which the Lord can unlock you. If you are looking for ideas on how to be clear, plain, truthful, and daring, you do not want to miss reading The Power of One.If you need material that can help you address topics on current issues, The Power of One is a great study tool.If you are participating in the planting or resuscitation of a church, a cell, a discipleship project, or a study group, The Power of One will go hand-in-hand with the resources you need.If you dare to be ONE who will make the difference, then read Oliver Phillips' The Power of One." -- Dr. Eugenio Duarte, General Superintendent, Church of the Nazarene
