Seller's Description:
None. Very Good Indeed in Very Good jacket. Collected poetical works by the renowned eighteenth century satirist Charles Churchill, edited by James Laver and published here in a two volume limited edition set by the King's Printers. Charles Churchill was best known for 'The Rosciad', his first successful poem published in 1761. The work detailed the faults of the various actors and actresses on the London stage with biting humour and recklessness, and was incredibly popular. However, as expected, Churchill's satire made him many enemies, and prompted counter attacks from his subjects, with many publisher's refusing to produce his work. A complete two volume set, with a green cloth slipcase. This is an unnumbered copy, one of 'six hundred copies for the world'. Volume II features a facsimile frontispiece plate of 'Hogarth's Reply to Churchill'. In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt detail to the front board, and original slipcase. Externally excellent, with minor shelfwear to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight fading to spine, as usual with this colour binding, and the odd small handling mark to boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout. Pages occasionally uncut throughout. Faint ink mark to fore edge of page xii volume I, slightly offset to facing page. Light offsetting to endpapers. Slipcase very smart, with the odd bumping and fading to extremities and the odd spot. Very Good Indeed.
