A year later, celebrated house producer -- and fellow Philly native -- King Britt was called in to remix the album. The first Philadelphia Experiment was a diffuse, at times meandering, sojourn through jazz, soul, and hip-hop, exploring the musical tastes of three highly accomplished -- and, at the same time, very different -- musicians. Encompassing original -- mostly improvised -- material and covers from a diverse list of artists, including Sun Ra, Elton John, and Grover Washington, Jr., the ambitious project hit the mark often, though sometimes spread itself too thin. The remixes take the level of diffusion to an almost absurd level. Enlisting a small army of top-notch producers, King Britt filters the already eclectic material through a broad spectrum of house, techno, acid jazz, Latin, Afrotech, and hip-hop influences. Like all remix albums, the results are, well, mixed. When this is on, it's on, and some winning moments include King Britt's twisting the trippy "Miles Hit" with his signature scuba sound, Oba Funke tearing up "(Re) Moved" with some seriously streamlined funk riffing, and Phillip Charles tweaking vintage-era jazz with dancefloor beats on the title track.
