Almost Perfection
This is the finest production of the story of the phantom I have ever seen. It has a bit of everything (with superb performances by Charles Dance and Burt Lancaster), including comic relief, pathos, concurent love stories, etc. The phantom is presented as a tragic figure, molded by circumstances beyond his control, indulged by his father (Lancaster), and provoked by the insensitivies of others. One cannot help but empathize with him, and will probably be brought to tears by the sadness of the ending, as I have been every time the film is screened.
