Tim Bishop is an author with a business background and a passion for cycling. In ââ?¬Å"The Persistent Road,ââ?¬Â? Bishop uses his passion and his faith to inspire readers.
Doug Zimmer is a middle-aged man with a wife who is dying of cancer. The news has hit him hard, and his life will only get more complicated. After his wife dies, Doug remembers the instructions his wife gives him. She doesnt want him to wallow in grief. He is to go on living and Doug does that by purchasing a bicycle and preparing for a sabbatical from life.
When Doug decides to leave on his bicycle, he only tells his sister Carmen. She doesnt know where hes going, but she will be his lifeline home. Doug sets off on an adventure that brings memories of his life with Ruth to the forefront of his mind. He remembers most the strength she had in her faith. While she loved God, Doug was not a believer. Along the way, Doug meets people in campgrounds, restaurants, and motels.
Doug is constantly fighting the demons in his head. He is constantly being reminded that God is real, and He loves Doug. When Doug meets Lauren, he is taken down a spiritual road. She shares her faith and they become quick friends. Lauren and Doug will experience a tragedy together and meet Brother Jim. Doug walks through this tragedy by finding hope in Jesus.
ââ?¬Å"The Persistent Roadââ?¬Â? is a story of hope. A hope that can only come from God. Bishop lays out how God is persistent when pursuing his children. Along Dougââ?¬â?¢s journey, he is shown God in the beautiful nature scenes he sees. He is shown God in the people he meets who share their own faith and extend hospitality to him. Doug is surrounded by the hope and love God has for us. While we stray from the Father at times, we are reminded that He is always pursuing us. God never gives up on us.
I love the message the author shares with us in his words. Once Doug started his cycling adventure, however, the pace slowed. It became a repetitive cycle of biking for many miles, resting, eating, and repeating. The author quickly drew me in from the first sentence of the first chapter, but I found myself struggling in the coming chapters. I was thankful the pace picked up in the last quarter of the book.
Overall, ââ?¬Å"The Persistent Roadââ?¬Â? by Tim Bishop is a beautiful story of how God interacts with us. The hope we have in Him is beyond our comprehension. When we think life is so cruel and there is no way of escape, our hope lies in Jesus. For the cyclists of the world, this is a story for you.

slow pace
The Persistent Road is the story of Doug Zimmer's road to faith both literally and figuratively. Doug takes to the road on a recumbent bicycle following the loss of his job and the death of his wife. Along the way seeds planted by his wife and sister are nurtured through the beauty of God's creation, God's intervention and protection, and people he meets along the way. The story proceeds at a slow pace, and does require some persistence on the part of the reader. One has to enjoy lengthy descriptions of the scenery Doug passes through. His interactions with many kinds of people keep the readers engaged.
