Seller's Description:
Very Good. Size: Large 8vo 9"-10; Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, neat and tidy paste-downs; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining. Six raised bands to spine, top edge gilt, with rubbed gilt lettering in compartments, and with four mission bells. Rubbing to joints and to gilt title on front cover, but gilt ruled borders and four additional mission bells are still sharp and distinct. Else and withal, a handsomely produced volume, indeed, bound in oversized octavo hardcover format, a fine contribution to the Gold Edition "of the Romanceful story California, " inscribed to and registered in the name of Frank R. Strong as a patron of the Art and Historical Literature of the West, Limited Edition, being #95. Howard Simon provided 14 wood-block illustrations, including at frontis, covering the earliest explorations, through episode known as the Donner Party, and three maps: The Far West Before 1845, The Overland Expeditions, and Sea Routes to California (fold-out). Illustrated black and gold pastedowns front and rear. 452 pp. This volume covers the earliest visitors and settlers of California, including the Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, Russian, and Americans. Bound in gold-stamped dark brown cloth, with top gilding. Also included are facsimile signatures of two surviving members of the ill-fated Donner Party-Isabella Breen McMahon and Catherine Hecox Tilden Brown. There is also appended a 46-pp. "Narrative of Benjamin Wilson, " who settled California before the Gold Rush, and who survived a number of encounters with Apaches and grizzlies. This book looks particularly nice on the shelf.
