Excerpt from The Pastor's Duty in the Present Times: A Discourse Delivered Before the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, at the Opening of Its Annual Meeting, in Belfast, July 4, 1848 Timothy, to whom this epistle was addressed, had been brought up in the Jewish religion, and early instructed in the Old Testament Scriptures. The preaching of the apostle was the instrument of his conversion. From that period he advanced so rapidly in the knowledge of divine things, and was so distinguished for the amiableness of his dispositions, for the holiness of his life, and his zeal in the cause of truth, that he was greatly loved and esteemed among the brethren. Their testimony to the excellence of his character was so general and so strong, that when the apostle came from An tioch to Lystra the second time, him would Paul have to go forth with him. The high Opinion of the brethren was not, however, the only reason for the apostle's choice. It would appear, from the eighteenth verse of the first chapter of this epistle, that he was specially pointed out by divine revelation and authority as a person fitted to be ordained to the office of an evangelist. Accordingly, he was solemnly set apart by the laying on of the hands of the presbytery, and afterwards the gift Of the Holy Ghost was communi cated by the laying on of the apostles' hands.
