Seller's Description:
Fair. No Jacket. Book. 8vo-over 7¾-9¾" tall. xiv, 425pp., (i). Circa 1944. Actual date of publication is unknown. Ex-library. No dust-jacket. Exterior library treatments have cleaned up fairly nicely. Volume a little cocked. Tiny worn spots and tears in places to extremities, mainly to head and tail of spine and corners of boards. This wear isn't terribly offensive. Light soiling to edges of pages. A little spacing to hinges, though if handled a little more carefully than would normally be required, the volume can provide many more years of service. With clear and bright gilt lettering to spine and front cover, volume is still fairly attractive. The volume is accompanied by a simple, custom made protective cover from the time the book was in a monastery library.
I purchased this book for a friend because he wants to grow in his spiritual life. In my mind, that means getting to know Jesus from the inside... falling in love with Him, not only for what He did but for Who He is. The scriptures unlock information about Him. Goodier introduces us to how He thinks and how He feels... who He is as a real human being.... and thus, we fall in love with Him in a way before unknown.
The Passion and Death takes us through the final week of Jesus' life. [Note: Goodier also wrote an excellent smaller book on the birth and infancy of Jesus, on the resurrection, and an excellent two-volume set on the public life. The two volume set is another "must-have" and builds into the Passion and Death seemlessly]. Step by step, Goodier takes us through the Gospel accounts, combining all of the Gospels in perfect harmony, filling in the landscape with a perfect understanding of the geography of the land, the times and culture of the Jewish and Roman people, and bringing it all together with the Old Testament prophecies that point to these historic moments. As I read, I live these moments WITH Jesus Christ. I see what He sees and understand what He feels. In short, I enter INTO these scenes instead of just studying them from a distance. I've read the Gospels 100 times and yet, Goodier opens light to the Gospels that I have never seen shining there before... and he does all of this while remaining absolutely faithful to every line!
This is an absolute masterpiece... a Christian classic which should be in every Christian home!
